"Simply the act of thinking about something too much for too long."
Not only does this "thing" affect life, but it can take control.
I'm not talking about what to order at a restaurant, or what to wear... I'm talking about the thinking behind words, actions, reactions and responses.
So when does this come into play? Let me give you a few of my own examples:
- In bed, before closing my eyes
- When meeting new people
- When catching up with old people
- Whenever I use my phone
- As I'm writing this
More?
It starts with a small thought.
That thought makes you worry.
It turns into tornado of worrisome thoughts.
Next thing you're stuck in a cycle that is very hard to get out of... what to do?!
To: all the over thinkers, and myself
Stop thinking. Enjoy the present moment. The things you are thinking about exist in your head, just there and when you think about them, you give them the power to control - so DON'T. Who cares? Thinking less will lead a happier life.
If you're beating yourself up over an uncomfortable/awkward situation (that may or may have not happened years ago) remember two things:
1) People tend to think about themselves and their things more than others'
2) Learn how to laugh about it!
Tips for what I do when my mind tends to wander too much:
~ Practice Acceptance - accepting these thoughts and whatever has happened in the past. The past won't change
~ Learn from the mistake
~ Try to observe these thoughts, not live them
~ More listening, Less talking
~ Practice understanding why things happen
~ Let Optimism be your friend
